A Case Study: Hydrochem C-956A
Hydrochem C-956A is a time proven,
corrosion inhibitor for MEA, DEA, UCARSOL, amine-based gas treating systems,
and glycol- based dehydration systems. It
has been successfully used by major gas producers, and it has decreased amine
losses and equipment failures drastically in many systems.

This graph illustrates the corrosion rate reduction in
a DEA bench test using lean amine from an actual system. The corrosion rates of the uninhibited,
"blank" sample began at 7 mpy and gradually fell to slightly below
2 mpy. The sample which was inhibited
with 225 ppm of Hydrochem C-956A
exhibited a rapid corrosion rate reduction to less than 1 mpy and ended at
approximately 0.2 mpy after a 9-hour period.
Continental Products of Texas normally will recommend a
Hydrochem C-956A residual of 400 - 600 ppm.
We recommend adding the initial charge dosage over several weeks in
order to bring the residual into control over a gradual time period. We are extremely confident in Hydrochem C-956A's effectiveness. One of the side benefits of using Hydrochem C-956A is that as it passivates
the metal surfaces of the system, it also cleans the surfaces of the system. Old corrosion by-products are slowly removed
as a result. This product will not
foam; however, one question many concerned plant personnel ask is, "Will
this product cause my system to foam?"
The answer is NO.
The only foaming that can sometimes be associated with
the use of Hydrochem C-956A is
related to the cleaning properties of this inhibitor. If the system being treated is dirty and has experienced
corrosion related problems, the system will normally have corrosion by-products
such as iron oxide and iron sulfide on the metal surfaces. As these corrosion products are removed, the
particulate matter which goes into solution may create foaming. Good filtration will be a big help in this
matter, and normally this will not be a problem after the system cleans up.

This graph illustrates the corrosion rates of the vapors
from a reboiler in an actual DGA system.
Prior to the use of Hydrochem
C-956A, the corrosion rate was 51.5 mpy.
After 5 months the corrosion rate was 0.37 mpy, and by the end of 11
months the corrosion rate had dropped below 0.04 mpy.
We believe that good corrosion rate data prior to
implementing Hydrochem C-956A is
very helpful in evaluating its' effectiveness. As part of our normal service, we will assist you in determining
corrosion coupon placement if they do not already exist in the system. We will also monitor the Hydrochem C-956A residual for you
by means of a test procedure and furnish you with written recommendations. The test procedure is made available to our
customers if they wish to monitor their systems themselves.
